Description:

This salt and cobalt glazed stoneware jug features the popular maker's mark

JOHN BURGER
ROCHESTER

It was made by John Burger at his pottery in Rochester, New York, circa 1860. The front is decorated with a fine, slip-cup-applied flower with multiple leaves. The leaves and flower petals are highlighted on the edges with small dashes of cobalt, giving depth and shadow to the decoration. Above the flower is a slip-trailed "2" to indicate capacity. Burger is admired for making some of the most detailed and masterfully decorated pieces of American stoneware. Examples signed with his maker's mark remain some of the most desirable among collectors today.

Size:

Approx. 12" tall.

Condition:

Overall excellent condition. Two shallow base chips, one small, one large. Very thin line extending from base approximately 1 inch.
