Extremely Rare, Very Small-Sized OLD BRIDGE, NJ Fish Jar

Back to New York, New Jersey & New England Stoneware

Item #NJOJ02

Description:

This jar is only 6" tall, and the inside diameter ranges from only 3" to 3 ¼". It holds only slightly over 1 quart of liquid. This is possibly the smallest size ever produced at the Old Bridge, New Jersey pottery site.

From the shards excavated at the original site, the pottery seems to date from 1805 to 1823. James Morgan, Jr., Jacob van Wickle, Nicholas van Wickle and Branch Green were the potters. No pieces bearing a potter's mark have been found.

This jar is coggle band decorated around its top section with impressed fish and berries, washed over in cobalt blue. It has a nicely rolled rim and 2 incised lines on the shoulder.

Size:

6" tall.

Condition:

Excellent. One very, very tight and hard-to-see 2 ½" line, extending down from the rim. Otherwise, the condition is basically original, with a couple of in-the-making, glazed over dings and a stone pop out. (What looks like a crack in the first of the "More Photos" is actually a small incised line, done in the potting.)
