Item #NJOG01 |

| Description: |
This exceptional 2 gallon stoneware storage jug was made at the Old Bridge pottery in Old Bridge, New Jersey, during the first quarter of the nineteenth century. It is not only coggle band decorated around its shoulder with birds & leaves, but is also deeply impressed on the front, in large capital letters, RUM. Both the ring of birds & leaves and the word, RUM, are highlighted with rings of cobalt blue. The jug holds about 2 gallons. Old Bridge stoneware with either the coggled decoration or the impressed name of the contents is very rare. This jug has both, making it incredibly rare and desirable. From the shards excavated at the original site, this pottery seems to date to 1805-1823. James Morgan, Jr., Jacob van Wickle and Branch Green were the potters. No pieces bearing a potter's mark have been found. |
