Early Stoneware Presentation Jar with Incised Initials,
Probably New Jersey

Back to New York, New Jersey & New England Stoneware

Item #NEXJ04

Description:

This early, small-sized stoneware jar is decorated on the back with a small pine tree design and on the front with the incised initials,

R M C

It holds about one half gallon of liquid. Small stoneware jars similar to this one were made at the Old Bridge, New Jersey Pottery operated by James Morgan, Jr., Jacob van Wickle and Branch Green from about 1805 to 1823. Though the form is not identical to extant Old Bridge pieces, this jar was probably made in New Jersey, circa 1820's, though it may have been made elsewhere, in New York or New England. This is a scarce example of an early stoneware presentation piece, with an attractive form and small size.

Size:

6 7/8" tall.

Condition:

Excellent condition. Some small chips on the rim and at the base. A very thin, almost invisible line extends only 1" from rim.
