Description:

This ovoid stoneware jar is signed on the front

ORCUTT
AND
WAIT
WHATELY

It was made at the pottery of the partnership between Stephen Orcutt and Luke and Obediah Wait sometime after 1805. The name is highlighted in strokes of cobalt as are the handle terminals. Several incised lines separate the collar from the body of the jar. The bulbous belly of the vessel tapers to an incised foot. The interior is albany slip glazed. Overall, a nice early piece bearing a scarce maker's mark.

Size:

11 ½" tall.

Condition:

Several shallow base chips. Chip to one ear. Large, glazed-over chip on interior. Stone ping on interior.
