Description:

This four-gallon stoneware jar is stamped with the unusual maker's mark

MASON & RUSSELL
CORTLAND

It has an outstanding form that is extremely ovoid at the shoulder and tapers to a small base. The jar has a slightly flared collar, and an inner rim to fit a lid. A cobalt floral design decorates the front, with additional highlights to the name and capacity mark. Rounded pocket handles are applied to the sides. A group of incised lines runs the circumference of the jar around the shoulder. Made circa 1840.

13" tall.

Condition:

Crack from rim to top of one handle. Thin crack extends down back from rim about four inches. Several chips to exterior of rim. Chip on underside with line extending from it on underside.
