Description:

This approximately 1 1/2 gallon, salt-glazed stoneware jug is signed in large letters

CHARLESTOWN

It was made at the pottery of Barnabus Edmands and William Burroughs in the Boston, Mass. area, sometime during or after 1821. The top third of the jug as well as a lower portion of the jug is coated in a glossy, ochre-colored slip. This early jug has a great look about it, with a tall, heavily incised collar, a ribbed handle that ends in a point, an incised foot, and ovoid body. A nice example of early New England stoneware.

Size:

11 ¾" tall.

Condition:

Excellent, as-made condition. Recessed areas from kiln stackers on top of spout and handle, done in making.
