| Description: |
Fish decorated American stoneware is considered rare and is highly prized by collectors. This ovoid jar is outstanding in several ways. It is expertly decorated on the front with an incised fish, which has excellent detail, including fins, an eye, mouth, gills and split tail. The entire fish is filled in with cobalt blue. The fish is a cod, which is native to the Boston area, where this early jar was made. The ears on this large, 3 gallon jar are outstanding; they are open, loop handles, with cobalt blue decoration at the ends. The jar is ovoid and tapers toward its top to a small mouth; the open handles and small mouth give it a very stately and important appearance. The collar is decorated with 2 groups of incised lines, and the base is surrounded by incised lines, as well. The maker of this jar is Jonathan Fenton, working in Boston, Massachusetts, c1794 to 1797. This is a very rare and outstanding example of very early New England stoneware, made by a famous Boston maker. |
