| Description: |
This extremely rare, 2 gallon stoneware storage jug was made by James Miller, originally a potter in Strasburg, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He was born in 1814 and moved to Harrison County, Indiana in about 1837, after potting in Strasburg from about 1833-37. After moving to Indiana, he established his pottery just across the Ohio River in Brandenburg, Kentucky, where he operated from c1840-1884. This jug is stencilled with cobalt blue over nearly the entire front:
NEW, ALBANY MADE. BY J.H. MILLEr KY BrANDENBUrG
Signed Miller / Strasburg stoneware is extremely rare and valuable. In our opinion, this jug is rarer than Miller stoneware produced in Strasburg, Virginia. This is a super piece for the Shenandoah Valley, Indiana, Kentucky or stencilled stoneware collector. This jug is not only rare, but exceptionally artistic. Please see Comstock for more information on James Miller and, particularly, p. 294 for pictures of 2 Miller / Brandenburg crocks. |
