Very Folky Blue Decorated John Bell Jar

Back to Pennsylvania Stoneware

Item #JBSJ01

Description:

Two large bright cobalt blue flowers decorate the front and back of this 3 gallon stoneware jar, stamped,

John Bell
WAYNESBORO
3

The visual appeal of this jar has an exceptionally folky quality. The ovoid shape indicates it was made c1850 or possibly earlier. It has very interesting treatment at the rim. The ears are huge and thick.

Size:

12 ½" tall.

Condition:

Large Y-shaped crack beginning on the bottom and extending up the front and around to the back. The crack has been sealed and the jar rings perfectly when struck. There is also a small wedge measuring about 1" x ½" on the bottom, extending up the side about ¼", which looks like the cause of the crack.

This is a very well-thrown and visually appealing piece of Americana. Decorated John Bell stoneware is becoming more and more difficulty to find, especially pieces of this quality. The value of John Bell pottery has been increasing dramatically and as it becomes more and more difficult to find, it will continue to increase. The damage on this piece is reflected in the price.
