Vibrantly Decorated and Highly Unusual Pair of Redware Canning Jars, Signed "JOHN BELL"

Back to Pennsylvania Stoneware

Item #JBRJ07

Description:

This exceptional pair of redware canning jars was produced at the John Bell pottery of Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840 to 1880. Each jar is deeply impressed on the underside,

JOHN BELL

The outstanding coloration on these jars was achieved by coating them in lead and then applying several rows of manganese with a sponge. Sponge decoration is not unusual to Bell pottery, though its usage on canning jars, and in such a lavish manner, is quite unusual. Both jars have inner rims, similar to those found on the canning jars of Western Pennsylvania, made to fit a tin lid. One is slightly smaller than the other, and has some celadon-like coloration near the top. Despite their differences, we feel these jars were probably sold as a pair. Items signed "JOHN BELL" are rarely available in pairs. The two offered here are indeed exceptional examples of Shenandoah Valley redware, both in terms of rarity as well as aesthetic value.

Size:

One canning jar is 6 1/2" tall. The other is 6 3/4" tall.

Condition:

Both have very minor chips to interior of rim.
