Unique & Important Miniature Redware Jug made at John Bell Pottery, Incised C.F. BELL

Back to Pennsylvania Stoneware

Item #JBRG02

Description:

This miniature redware presentation jug is incised on the underside

Mrs. Krice
Sept. 11
1894
C.F. Bell

It was made by Charles Frederick Bell, son of John Bell, at his father's pottery in Waynesboro, PA. Charles, like other sons John W. and Upton M. Bell, was an active potter at his father's Waynesboro shop, and is credited with making, among the usual utilitarian vessels, presentation animal figures, including a dog and a horse. This jug is a rare example of the later products made at the Bell pottery in Waynesboro, when it was under the ownership of his brother, Upton. It measures just under 4" tall. The surface was glazed with lead and manganese, which resulted in an attractive orange and brown mottling with a greenish cast in some areas. The jug has a nice form for its small size, with a wide mouth and a bulbous shoulder that tapers to a smaller base. This is truly a unique piece of Bell pottery and an important link to the family's final years of Waynesboro production. The Waynesboro shop was closed in 1898.

Size:

Just under 4" tall.

Condition:

Minor wear to spout. Handle missing and section of glaze missing (3/8" x 6/8") at base of handle; some tiny nicks of glaze missing and a few spots of crazing visible. It is our assessment that the missing handle and glaze loss occurred in the firing due to the nature of the exposed clay.
