This glazed, approximately 1 1/2 gallon redware jug is stamped firmly below the spout
WAYNESBORO It was made at the John Bell pottery of Waynesboro, PA, circa 1850 to 1880. The glaze is a warm reddish-brown, streaked with orange, and attractively mottled lighter and darker in various spots. The jug's handle is deeply ribbed, and has three depressed marks for decoration at its terminal. Overall, a quality example of John Bell's redware jug form. |
