| Description: |
This very large redware bowl is clear-glazed with lead on the interior, creating a colorful reddish-orange hue, set against a heavily sponged, manganese decorated rim. It is stamped on the exterior, near the rim,
WAYNESBORO', which is a maker's mark used at the John Bell pottery of Waynesboro, PA, circa 1850 to 1880. This bowl has tall sides, a pronounced rim, and a substantial taper down to the base. It looks particularly impressive because of its large size. Though similarly decorated John Bell bowls surface from time to time, this is one of the largest we have seen, measuring 16" across the top. It is larger, for instance, than any of the John Bell bowls currently on display at the Manger exhibit at the Washington County Historical Society in Western Maryland. |
