Important Slip-Decorated Redware Bowl, attributed to
John George Weis, Sr., Hagerstown

Back to Maryland Stoneware

Item #HGRB01

Description:

This early redware bowl is decorated on the inside with alternating straight and wavy lines of slip-trailed iron-oxide under a clear lead glaze. The multi-beaded rim, base molding, and slip-trailed design make it strongly attributable to the Hagerstown school. Its similarities to redware bowls by the Weis family of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, as well as its early appearance, suggest that it was made by John George Weis, Sr., patriarch of the Weis potting family. Weis began his American potting career in Hagerstown, circa 1750 and would later establish another pottery in Shepherdstown, where his progeny would pot for the next hundred years. Due to the overall appearance of this bowl, it is likely to be one of Weis' Hagerstown products, made circa 1780. According to Comstock, Weis should be accredited as the father of the Shenandoah Valley potting tradition, one whose styles would influence the work of potters in Hagerstown and Shepherdstown, and ultimately Winchester and Strasburg.

This piece sports a rich patina on the interior and exterior, and is in excellent condition for its age. The glaze, even after being two centuries old, is in remarkable shape. This is an important representative of the Hagerstown school of redware pottery, and a representative of the very early beginnings of the Shenandoah Valley potting heritage.
