Extremely Rare Small-Sized Western PA Stoneware Pitcher
E. LOLLEY / WASHINGTON D.C.

Back to Pennsylvania Stoneware

Item #DCLP01

Description:

This exceptionally rare stoneware pitcher is decorated across the entire front with freehand and stencil decoration. The merchant advertising is clear and strong, and reads,

E. LOLLEY
616
PENN AVE.,
WASHINGTON

The entire collar is freehand decorated with the lines and dashes characteristic of Western Pennsylvania stoneware. The ends of the handle are also decorated. The size of this pitcher is remarkable, as well; it holds only three pints and closely resembles tanware pitchers produced in New Geneva.

E. Lolley operated his store at 616 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C., circa 1870. As was the case with many other merchants in business at that time (primarily those in the Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia areas), Lolley ordered stoneware from the New Geneva / Greensboro, Pennsylvania, area emblazoned with his business name. Very few Lolley pieces--in any form--survive today. Those that do survive are highly sought after.

This stoneware pitcher has appeal not only to Western PA. and Washington, D.C., collectors but also to collectors of high quality Americana. E. Lolley's store was located on the same street as the White House.

Size:

Only 8 ¼" tall.
