| Description: |
This exceptionally rare stoneware pitcher is decorated across the entire front with freehand and stencil decoration. The merchant advertising is clear and strong, and reads,
616 PENN AVE., WASHINGTON
E. Lolley operated his store at 616 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C., circa 1870. As was the case with many other merchants in business at that time (primarily those in the Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia areas), Lolley ordered stoneware from the New Geneva / Greensboro, Pennsylvania, area emblazoned with his business name. Very few Lolley pieces--in any form--survive today. Those that do survive are highly sought after. This stoneware pitcher has appeal not only to Western PA. and Washington, D.C., collectors but also to collectors of high quality Americana. E. Lolley's store was located on the same street as the White House. |
