Very Rare Decorated ½ Gallon Jar, P. HISER & SONS, Washington, DC |
||||
Back to Virginia Stoneware |
Item #DCHJ01 |
|||
| Description: |
Decorated stoneware marked by the Washington, DC potter, Paul Hiser, is very rare. Most extant Hiser pieces, which are rare in and of themselves, are plain and undecorated. This small sized jar is stamped,
WASHINGTON, D.C. and is decorated with 3 cobalt blue flowers around its top part. One of the flowers was placed near the potter's mark as if it were intentionally placed there to embellish the signature. The decoration is characteristic of Baltimore production, and Hiser was no doubt influenced by the many potteries operating just north of him. Deep incising just below the rim enhances the jar's appearance and was used to secure burlap or cheesecloth to the top of the jar, with the use of a string. |
