| Description: |
This incredibly rare churn is stamped with a 2 gallon capacity mark surrounded by unevenly spaced dots and, W. CITY D.C. Stoneware signed "R. BUTT" is very rare! Only a handful of pieces remain today. This is possibly the only churn signed by Richard Butt to have survived. Richard Butt was not a potter. He was the administrator of a Washington, DC asylum and most speculate that the inmates made the stoneware. This operation only lasted a short time. This churn was made circa 1830. It is nicely decorated front and back with flowers and leaves. The ears are very small and simple. The churn has an overall folky quality which can be attributed to its 1830 date. |
