| Description: |
This large, four-gallon stoneware jug is stamped below the spout
NEWPORT, PA 4 and was made at the pottery of Michael and Theophilus Miller circa 1860. The front of the jug is heavily decorated with an elaborate and striking floral design of three tulips on a central, multi-leafed stem. The decoration is very artistically rendered and measures 13" tall, covering nearly the entire front of the jug. Cobalt dabs decorate the handle terminals. The piece exhibits excellent color contrast between the cobalt decoration and fired clay background. This is likely one of the best florals by this popular Central PA maker to have surfaced in recent years. Fresh from an eclectic collection in Minnesota. |
