Outstanding 5 Gallon, Slip-Trailed Stoneware Jar
att. Henry Remmey, Baltimore, c. 1825

Back to Maryland Stoneware

Item #BXJ14

Description:

This ovoid, 5 gallon stoneware jar is finely decorated with slip-trailed floral designs on the front and back, as well as under the handles. The clay color and vivid, slip-trailed cobalt decoration place its origin in Baltimore, circa 1825. Judging by the form and style of decoration, this jar was most likely made by Henry Remmey. The slip-trailing is some of the finest and most ornate we have seen on 19th century American stoneware. The slip cup employed to apply the cobalt appears to have been much smaller than those typically used, resulting in thinner, more delicate lines. The front and back of the jar are decorated with a row of stylized flowers, surmounted by a row of stylized leaves, and underlined with a wavy line. These Neo-Classical motifs were probably inspired by formal English pearlware of the period. Stylized flowerheads, consisting of four open circles embellished with slip-trailing, decorate the undersides of the handles. The form is a high-collared, baluster type, with heavy incising where the collar meets the body, and a large rounded foot at the base. The ears are rolled and semi-open, connecting to the body of the jar at their peaks. This is an exceptional Baltimore piece, in terms of size, form, and decoration.

Overall, one of the more artistically rendered examples of Baltimore stoneware to have surfaced.
