| Description: |
This 1 gallon, ovoid stoneware jar was made c1820, with strong attribution to Baltimore, Maryland, possibly Henry Remmey. It is decorated front and back with slip-trailed cobalt blue flowers. Slip-trailed chain links decorate its shoulder, which is sometimes indicative of a slave potter. The ends of the handles are also generously blue decorated. The bottom part of the collar, as well as the base, are decorated with deeply incised lines. The handles are superb. The open loop handles not only add interest to the piece, but give it a very stately appearance. Both the exterior and interior are salt-glazed, an early technique. |

9 ½" tall. |

Condition: |
|
Excellent, near mint condition. There is a thin line at the base, under the glaze, and another thin line on the collar--both probably done in the making. Two tiny chips on the bottom. Outstanding condition for a heavily used piece of this age. |
