RARE Baltimore Whiskey Jug, BUCKLYE'S LITTLE BROWN JUG

Back to Maryland Stoneware

Item #BXG01

Description:

This unusual stoneware jug is a folky and very rare example of Baltimore stoneware. It is impressed on the front,

BUCKLYE S
LITTLE BROWN JUG
418 N' GAY ST

"Bucklye" is an apparent misspelling of "Buckley." This jug is a very small size, measuring just 4" at its tallest point; it is also formed in a very unusual shape, resembling a cruet more so than a jug. Three "pinched" areas surround the base, and were either intentionally applied by the potter or were a result of the clay slumping in the kiln.

Baltimore whiskey jugs are highly collectible and the form of this piece is very rare. It was made circa 1850.

Size:

4" tall.

Condition:

Original condition, with no flaws to speak of. (The dark mark on the G in "GAY" is a fleck of dark glaze, NOT a dent or hole.)
