Unusual Baltimore Stoneware Churn w/ Guide, Signed "P. HERRMANN"

Back to Maryland Stoneware

Item #BHH01

Description:

This blue-decorated, two gallon stoneware churn is signed under one handle

P. HERRMANN
2,G. z It was made at the pottery of Peter Herrmann in Baltimore, Maryland, circa 1860 to 1890. The front and back of the vessel are decorated with a stemmed, flowering plant, characteristic of pieces of Baltimore manufacture. Interestingly, despite the 2 G stamped with the maker's mark, there are two, hand-incised dashes next to one handle to indicate gallonage. The churn is expertly thrown, with a large, dramatically flaring collar and heavy molding where the rim meets the body of the vessel. The interior of the rim curves inward to fit a guide for the dasher. This example comes with a stoneware guide that fits and appears to be an original product of Herrmann. Stoneware dasher guides are unusual in their own right.

The churn is one of the more desirable of stoneware forms. Though relatively common among Western Pennsylvania and New England makers, those produced south of Pennsylvania are quite rare. This is the first Peter Herrmann churn we can recall having seen.

Size:

Approx. 13 ¼" tall.

Condition:

Chips on dasher guide. One very small and one large rim chip. Y-shaped crack in underside. Tail of Y-shaped cracks extends up side, and branches out into two lines.
