| Description: |
This leather covered wooden box is lined with newspaper advertising the wares of Alexandria, Va. merchants Hugh Charles Smith and Robert Miller. The names of these merchants appear on highly sought after Alexandria, Virginia stoneware. Robert Miller, who learned the business from Hugh Smith, is E.J. Miller's father. Robert Miller owned and operated his firm from 1822-56, before making his son E.J. a partner; in 1865, he retired. Hugh Charles Smith joined his father Hugh's business in 1825. Judging by an article in this newspaper, this particular copy was published in May, 1826. The box was lined with the paper around that time, and the box itself was made in the early 19th century. The newspaper is most probably the Alexandria Gazette.
Please see the photos below for close-ups of the Smith & Miller ads. |
