Beautifully Decorated 1 Gallon Ovoid Jar Attributed to H.C. Smith, Alexa. |

Item #ALXJ03 |
|||
| Description: |
This one gallon ovoid jar is decorated all around with an unusual, bright cobalt floral decoration. The form and decoration resemble an extant piece of stoneware incised on the front, "Smith / Airville". Jars with that inscription were produced at the Alexandria, Virginia, H.C. Smith Pottery for use at Thomas Smith's Gloucester County, Virginia, "Airville" plantation. Thomas Smith was Hugh Smith's nephew. Besides the outstanding decoration around the jar, the dotted decoration around the 1 capacity mark is very unusual, and resembles in some ways a piece of fruit. This is a very appealing piece, made by a master potter. |
