Outstanding 1 ½ Gallon Stoneware Pitcher, Attributed to Smith, Alexa.

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #ALSP01

Description:

Extremely bright, electric cobalt blue decorates the top 2/3 of this magnificent stoneware pitcher. The decoration on the collar and the body is elaborate and done by an experienced potter. There is a series of incised lines on the shoulder and a 1 ½ gallon capacity mark. This piece is extremely striking, with blue that is difficult to describe because it is so bright and well done. Very few pieces turned out as nicely as this one!!

This pitcher is attributed to H.C. Smith from Alexandria, VA. and was made c1840. The decoration and quality lend this attribution when compared to marked pieces.

Size:

13 ½" tall.

Condition:

Excellent condition. A chip on the end of the spout and a few small base chips.
