| Description: |
This one-gallon stoneware jar was made at the Wilkes Street Pottery in Alexandria, VA, circa 1825, while the pottery was under the ownership of merchant, Hugh Charles Smith. This example is unsigned, though bears a Wilkes Street one-gallon capacity mark; similarly potted and decorated jars can be found stamped "H. SMITH & CO." and "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.". The jar features an elaborate floral design, with broad leaves branching to the left and right, and a single flower at its peak, which surrounds the one-gallon stamp. A similarly styled design decorates the enormous David Jarbour jar at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. The reverse of the jar is decorated with a handle-to-handle swag motif, underscored by three leaves. Typical to Smith stoneware, this pot has small tab handles at the sides and a thin, rolled collar. A very attractive example of Alexandria stoneware. |
