H. Smith & Co. 1 Gallon Jar, Alexandria, VA. |

Back to Virginia Stoneware |
Item #ALSJ03 |
|||
| Description: |
Beautifully decorated 1 gallon very ovoid jar, marked, "H. SMITH & CO." with 1 gallon capacity mark. Capacity mark is on the front in center. The potter's mark is over one of the handles, which is a very unusual technique. The mark is very deep and clear. The cobalt blue floral decoration on the front is extensive and covers about 1/2 of the front of this jar. The back is decorated with chain links, which is usually an indication that the piece was produced by a slave potter. This mark was used c1825-31 and possibly c1841-51. A very rare example of Alexandria, Virginia stoneware, made at the pottery of merchant Hugh Smith. |
