Two-Gallon Early Alexandria Rust-Glazed Stoneware Jar |
||||
Back to Virginia Stoneware |
Item #ALNJ09 |
|||
| Description: |
This salt and rust glazed stoneware jar measures about two gallons and was made in Alexandria, VA, circa 1815, possibly at the John Swann Pottery. The top and bottom of the jar were dipped in a rust-solution prior to firing. (This is one of the earliest decorating techniques in American stoneware.) Alexandria jars decorated with a "double dip" such as this one are unusual. The rest of the jar has an attractive, dark gray color, characteristic of most Alexandria stoneware. The shoulder is fitted with the typical tab handles, and is decorated with two lines of incising. A quality example of early Virginia stoneware. |
