Very Rare c1815 Stoneware Jar, attributed to John Swann, Alexandria

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #ALNJ03

Description:

Highly sought after stoneware storage jar, made c1815, very probably by John Swann of Alexandria, Virginia. It is decorated with cobalt blue on the front and back, as well as the top of the ears. Blue decorated pieces made by Swann are very difficult to find. The large majority of his pieces were not decorated. This piece is very characteristic of Swann stoneware, in shape, formation of the collar, style of the ears and color of the jar. The form and decoration suggest that this is one of the earliest cobalt decorated pieces of Alexandria stoneware to have survived.

Size:

11 ½" tall.

Condition:

2 thin cracks--one on the front and on the back. Minor chips.
