Alexandria, VA Spittoon, UNKNOWN MARK: S. Milburn

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #ALMS01

Description:

This nicely shaped stoneware spittoon is impressed with the maker's mark, "S. MILBURN," not "S.C. MILBURN." The S.C. MILBURN mark (a very rare Alexandria mark itself) was used by Stephen Calvert Milburn, son of the famous potter B.C. Milburn, 1867-73. The S. MILBURN potter's mark is an undocumented mark, probably also used by Stephen Calvert Milburn near the end of his career, circa 1873. This piece would be an excellent addition to an Alexandria stoneware collection.

Size:

3 ½" tall.

Condition:

Chip on bottom edge is the focal point of a thin crack, which runs across bottom, up the side, around the rim, and stops at the top of the side hole, where there is another chip.
