Rare B.C. MILBURN Alexandria, VA 1 ½ Gal. Stoneware Pitcher

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #ALMP01

Description:

Signed B.C. Milburn stoneware is highly sought after and is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Signed pitchers such as this one seldom come on the market. This piece is impressed on the shoulder with the potter's mark of Benedict Colbert Milburn, who used this mark c1846-67, as follows:

B.C. MILBURN
ALEXA.

A 1 ½ gallon capacity mark is impressed above the signature. The pitcher is decorated around the shoulder with seven (unusual for Milburn) cobalt blue flowers. The collar and spout are decorated with 5 typical Milburn stylized leafy designs. The extruded handle is extensively decorated, end to end, with ten cobalt blue dots.

The shape of this pitcher is highly unusual. The sides taper out dramatically, giving this object an extremely folky appearance. This squat shape is reminiscent of stoneware designed for use on ships to prevent them from tipping over. The rim, bottom of the collar and the shoulder are all embellished with deep incising. A wonderful addition to any collection!

11" tall.
