| Description: |
Signed B.C. Milburn stoneware is highly sought after and is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Signed pitchers such as this one seldom come on the market. This piece is impressed on the shoulder with the potter's mark of Benedict Colbert Milburn, who used this mark c1846-67, as follows:
ALEXA.
The shape of this pitcher is highly unusual. The sides taper out dramatically, giving this object an extremely folky appearance. This squat shape is reminiscent of stoneware designed for use on ships to prevent them from tipping over. The rim, bottom of the collar and the shoulder are all embellished with deep incising. A wonderful addition to any collection! |
