Very Rare Milburn Slip-Trailed Spice Jar

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #ALMJ03

Description:

Rare stoneware ovoid spice jar form, stamped,
½
B.C. MILBURN

"B.C. MILBURN" is rendered in a scarce, small font, which is seldom found on decorated examples. This example bears 3 finely executed, slip-trailed flowers on the front, as well as 3 pairs of wavy lines along the back. This thick cobalt slip-trailing creates an actual texture as it rises off the body of the piece. The jar has a pronounced collar and an incised line below the name. It was made at the Wilkes Street Pottery in Alexandria, VA, c1845.

Size:

Just under 8" tall. 5" at the base.

Condition:

Excellent. A very thin line, which extends 1" down from the collar. 1 base chip.
