Scarce Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "Decr 2. 1852," attributed to David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, 1852, rotund jar with applied lug handles, stepped rim, and deeply-carved lines at the shoulder, incised on the front "Decr 2. 1852." Reverse incised with three punctates for three gallons along with two slash marks, a hallmark of much of Drake's work. Surface covered in a heavy green alkaline glaze. Classic Drake form with desirable inscribed date. Unusually small size for a dated jar by this maker. Bottom with three filled drain holes that had been drilled for outdoor use as a planter. Flakes to interior base area. Large restored sections to rim. Some shallow chips to flange on interior of rim, designed to hold a lid. A 2 1/2" vertical line at base. Minor base chipping. H 12".
