Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed pastoral scene depicting a deer with turned head and spotted body flanked by a tree stump and pine tree. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Outstanding size to the design. Significant restoration throughout jar included painted touch-up to much of the decoration. Minor wear to interior of rim. Wear to inner rim for lid. H 14".
