Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a standing, spotted stag surrounded by ground cover, two split-rail fences, and a pine tree. Decoration covers a large area of the crock's front. An excellent example of one of American stoneware's most iconic designs. Small rim chip with crack extending down right side of crock's front. End of crack barely touches edge of ground decoration. Two small base chips. H 11".
