Rare Early-Period Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Inscribed "L.M.", Lanier Meaders, Cleveland, GA, circa early 1960s, squat-shaped jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an applied clay face including ball-shaped eyes within recessed sockets, a large nose with depressed sides, and closed mouth. Surface covered in a olive-green alkaline glaze with dark slip pupils. Underside with large, black-slip initials, "LM". This rare work by Meaders features glazed eyes, no ears, and no teeth, as well as his brushed initials on the underside, all characteristic of his early production period. One of the most important Lanier Meaders pieces we have ever offered. Mint condition. H 8".
