Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration of a Hatted Man, Stamped "S.D. KELLOGG / WHATELY," Massachusetts origin, circa 1851-1853, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded rim, the front decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a man with feathered hat, beard, and button coat. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The mark of Whately, Massachusetts pottery owner, Silas D. Kellogg is considered scarce and desirable. The most coveted designs from his pottery are the bird motifs attributed to his wife, Maria Crafts Kellogg, as stated on page 17 of Henry C. Baldwin's book, A Guide to Whately Pottery and Potters. Figural decorations other than her distinctive "mourning dove" motifs are virtually unheard of. This example, with its folky human form in profile, is arguably one of the finest examples of Kellogg stoneware known. Long thin crack extending from shoulder on right side of jug onto reverse and down to base. A 3/4" iron ping under handle. H 14".
