Possibly Unique Eight-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Large Cobalt Flowering Urn Decoration, Stamped "E. & L.P. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flowering pedestal-base urn with cross-hatched interior. Urn features a very large, brimming floral spray including a central flower surrounded by pointed leaves, a plume-shaped leaf, curled trails, and dotted accents. Slip-trailed "8" above. Excellent decoration, vivid color, and exceptional size. The eight-gallon capacity of this crock was not typically produced by the Nortons. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in the 1990s. Very nice condition. Faint 5 3/8" Y-shaped hairline under one handle, not visible on interior. 2 1/2" hairline from rim on side of crock. Two minor chips to end of one handle. A small in-the-firing chip to same handle. A contact mark including a 7/8" in-the-firing chip on reverse.
